ÖJV Aces Shine in Judo Grand Slam Draw: Polleres and Piovesana Seeded Well, Kallinger and Höllwart Face Tough Challenges

The good news: Thursday’s draw for the Judo Grand Slam in Antalya (TUR) went quite well for the two seeded ÖJV aces. Olympic silver medalist Michaela Polleres (-70/JC Sparkasse Wimpassing/Lower Austria), seeded number two, is waiting for the winner of the duel Laerke Olsson (DEN, 36th in the world rankings)/Hyeonji Yu (KOR/122) in round two. In the event of a win, there would be revenge in round 3 against Szabina Gercsak (HUN), who recently celebrated a surprise victory against the 26-year-old from Lower Austria in the bronze match at the Grand Slam in Baku (AZE). According to paper form, Polleres is once again the clear favorite. The head-to-head score is 5:3, the other two defeats were from 2016 and 2017 and are therefore of little relevance. Lubyana Piovesana (-63/LZ Hohenems/V), number 6 on the seeding list, will face Minel Akdeniz (TUR) or Samalay Yergaliyeva (KAZ). Like Polleres, a place in the quarterfinals (and thus at least a top 7 result) should also be possible for “Lulu”. The same applies to Katharina Tanzer (-48/SU Noricum Leibnitz/ST), who will face Yi-Chun Shen (TPE/96) in round one.

The bad news: Laura Kallinger (-57/Judoring/W) and Maria Höllwart (+78/ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen/S) face two unsolvable tasks – according to paper form. Laura has to go on the mat against Christa Deguchi (CAN/1) on the first day of the competition (Friday). The 28-year-old Canadian is the reigning world champion and leads both the world rankings and the Olympic qualification. In her three Grand Slam appearances so far this (Olympic) year, she has been on the podium (as winner in Baku/AZE, second in Paris/FRA and third most recently in Tbilisi/GEO). For comparison: Laura, 5th at last year’s U-23 European Championships, is 109th in the IJF ranking. Maria Höllwart will face Shiyan Xu (CHN/1), who is also top-seeded, in the heavyweight division on Sunday. The 27-year-old Chinese is number 3 in the world and a two-time Grand Slam winner.
