Disaster for some, fairy tale for others: Novak Djokovic fails in the third round of the tournament in Indian Wells. Outsider Luca Nardi can hardly believe his success against his idol.

Neither of them really knew what was happening to them. On the one hand, Novak Djokovic, 36, the number one in the tennis world, entered the third round in Indian Wells as the overwhelming favorite. On the other hand, Luca Nardi from Italy, 20 years young, number 123 in the world rankings, the clear outsider. As a child he had a poster of Djokovic on his wall – now he achieved a sensation against his idol.

The Italian, who only made it into the main draw of the prestigious tennis tournament as a lucky loser, defeated the Grand Slam record winner after 2:17 hours of play. with 6:4, 3:6, 6:3. Djokovic completely surprisingly failed in the third round of the Masters tournament – and had words of praise for his opponent: “He played great.” Nardi ultimately deserved to win. “I was rather surprised by my level. My level was really, really bad,” said the 24-time Grand Slam winner.

Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz in the quarterfinals

Unlike Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, fourth in the world rankings, is one round further, but had some trouble. The Russian won his third round match against Sebastian Korda (USA) 6:4, 5:7, 6:3.
