Nicolas Castro Leaves KRC Genk for Elche: What It Means for the Limburgers

With one matchday to go, KRC Genk still has everything in hand to participate in the Champions’ Play-offs. The Limburgers can secure their ticket on the field of Westerlo, but are now saying goodbye to a pawn in the run-up.

Genk announces the official departure of Nicolas Castro. The 23-year-old Argentinian midfielder is permanently moving to the Spanish second division club Elche, which has already rented him from the Limburgers since last summer.

Elche lifts the purchase option on Castro

The Spaniards stipulated a purchase option on Castro in the deal and will also exercise this option at the end of the season. Castro still had a contract with Genk until mid-2027, but will therefore permanently disappear from the payroll from next summer.

At Elche, Castro has already scored 5 goals and 2 assists in 29 games. He is clearly finding his niche in Spain, something that was not the case in our country. At Genk he could not continue and delivered only 1 assist in 26 appearances.

Genk paid 3.2 million for Castro

Genk nevertheless paid a lot of money for the Argentinian. In July 2022, it paid 3.2 million euros to free him from Newell’s Old Boys, the club from his home country where he made his breakthrough.

It is not clear how much Elche pays Genk for Castro. Transfer market estimates its current market value at 3 million euros. “Good luck in the future, Nico,” Genk waves the player goodbye in Spanish.
