No decision on an 18th game or on kickoffs, but owners voted to legislate on tackles.

Meeting in Florida for their big annual meeting, NFL owners decided to follow the recommendations of the competition committee regarding the safety of players on tackles. Thus, NFL Media and NFL Network report that “hip tackles” will now be banned by the league.

In its Article 18, the NFL therefore specifies that it will be considered a foul to bring a player to the ground:

  • catching the runner with both hands or grabbing with both arms; And
  • carry weight by pivoting or throwing hips/lower body, landing and locking runner’s legs or knees.
  • The violating team will be penalized 15 yards and will award an automatic first down.

According to the NFL Player Association, this type of tackle causes a high injury rate, which explains why the NFL decided to act.

“The greatest quality for an athlete is to be durable and available,” said Troy Vincent (Executive VP of Football Operations). “When a stock has an injury rate 20 to 25 times the average, it shatters your dreams. »

However, the decision does not only make people happy, with voices raised to signal a more complex nature of their role. But the league will work with coaches and referees to make the game safer.

“Do we have a problem?” The answer is yes,” said Rich McKay, dean of the competition committee. “It’s going to be difficult to call this penalty on the pitch, all the elements will have to be present. However, we wanted to make it a rule, in order to be able to manage discipline during the week. »
