Last season, the NFL held three games over Christmas 2023 and they were a huge success, according to Hans Schroeder, the league’s vice president of media distribution, during the NFL’s annual meeting.
For this reason, the NFL has announced that for the 2024 season two games will be played during Christmas. December 25 will be Wednesday, so the teams participating in these commitments will have little rest because they will have to play on a Sunday before.
“When we saw the ratings from a year ago, our fans really spoke,” Schroeder said. “We could certainly see that there is a lot of enjoyment and love for NFL football during Christmas.”
All three games last season, Raiders vs. Chiefs, Giants vs. Eagles, and Ravens vs. 49ers, set viewership records. The duel between the AFC West rivals averaged 29.6 million viewers while the match between Baltimore and San Francisco was the second most watched Monday Night Football since 1996, according to ESPN, with 27.2 million total viewers.

How many NFL games have been played on Christmas?
Since 1971, the NFL has played 30 games on Christmas and nine of them have taken place since 2020. The first two were played in the Divisional Round of the 1971 season when the Dallas Cowboys faced the Minnesota Vikings and the Miami Dolphins faced the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Cowboys are one of the teams that has played on Christmas the most times with five games: against the Vikings in 1971, against the Arizona Cardinals in 1995 and in 2010, against the Tennessee Titans in 2000 and against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2006.

There are six teams that have played at least once on Christmas and have not been able to win on that date: Detroit Lions (0-2), San Francisco 49ers (0-2), Cincinnati Bengals (0-1), Cleveland Browns ( 0-1), Houston Texans (0-1) and New York Giants (0-1).
