New York Giants Unlikely to Trade Into Top Three Picks for Quarterback in 2024 NFL Draft

The New York Giants reportedly aren’t likely to be able to trade into the top three picks of the 2024 NFL draft in order to select a quarterback.

According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanannone of the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders or New England Patriots have been a willing trade partner to this point.

The Bears, Commanders and Patriots own the top three picks in the draft, and since all of them have a significant need at quarterback, it seems likely that all of them will take a signal-caller.

Chicago figures to select USC quarterback Caleb Williams first overall after trading Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Then, the Commanders will choose between LSU’s Jayden DanielsNorth Carolina’s Drake Maye and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthyand New England will have a choice between which two are remaining.

The Arizona Cardinals at No. 4 and Los Angeles Chargers at No. 5 don’t have a quarterback need, so the Giants could stand pat at No. 6 and possibly get the fourth and final quarterback left from that top group, but there is a present danger regarding a team possibly leapfrogging them.

The Minnesota Vikings own the No. 11 overall pick from the draft and also acquired the No. 23 overall pick in a trade with he Houston Texans, so they have the ammo needed to potentially trade into the top five.

If the Vikes or another team manage to jump past the Giants and four quarterbacks are taken before they pick, they will have numerous options.

New York could stand pat and address a different area of need, it could trade back and take a less-touted quarterback or it could trade back and wait on a quarterback until the later rounds.

As of now, Daniel Jones is in line to be the Giants’ starting quarterback in 2024 with free-agent signing Drew Lock backing him up.

Jones had a career year in 2022 when he led the Giants to the playoffs, which resulted in New York signing him to a four-year, $160 million contract extension.

That decision did not pay early dividends, as multiple injuries limited Jones to just six games last season, and he struggled when healthy, going 1-5 and throwing two touchdown passes compared to six interceptions.

While the Giants essentially have to keep Jones this year due to the dead cap hit they would incur from cutting him, they can potentially move on after the season, so finding his successor a year early would make sense.

SNY’s Connor Hughes reported earlier this month that the Giants are not only willing to draft a quarterback early, but they are willing to trade up in order to make it happen.

However, should the Giants get shut out from landing one of the top four quarterbacks in the draft, they could try to get Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. or Oregon’s Bo Nix a bit later, or they. could instead opt to address the quarterback situation next year.
