Where they look elsewhere and then hire a new coach, they take a quick look around in Freiburg and boom: Christian Streich’s successor has already been found internally. The style-defining coach of the current Bundesliga ninth-place team is leaving at the end of the season after twelve and a half years as head coach of the sports club – and in comes Julian Schuster, who left his mark in Freiburg as a defensive midfielder from 2008 to 2018 and in January 2012, at the beginning of the Streich era , was elected the team’s widely respected captain.
In the new season, Schuster, a leader without a show-off attitude, moves to the top of the Freiburg football teaching community. And that despite the fact that he has not yet been the head coach of a SCF youth team or the second team, but is an influential so-called liaison coach and co-coach who looks after the greatest talents in the Freiburg football school, the club’s U23 team and the professional team cared intensively. On Friday, SC Freiburg confirmed what had been expected for days: that Streich’s confidant will be Streich’s successor from July 1st.

A high honor, perhaps also a heavy burden, for the Swabian, who now has all the certificates to be able to report back as head coach in the Bundesliga.
“For me, coaching at the sports club is both a matter of the heart and a challenge,” commented the upcoming head coach in the club’s press release on his promotion on Friday morning. “I am aware of the task and am taking on it with full conviction, but also with humility and respect at. Unity, passion and connection to the city and the region – these are the values that characterize the sports club for me.”
When looking at the Freiburg path, sports director Jochen Saier emphasized that at the end of a search process, the SCF “decided with great conviction to go the same way with Julian”. “His specialist knowledge, his personality and his extensive identification with the philosophy and values of SC Freiburg were key criteria for us.”
