NBA to Close G League Ignite Team at End of Season Due to Changing Landscape

The NBA announced this Thursday that it will close, at the end of this season, the G League Ignite, its team in the G League.

The decision was announced by G League president Shareef Abdur-Rahim, citing the “changing basketball landscape, including the NCAA’s ‘Name, Image and Likeness’ (NIL) policy.”

Among the talents that are part of the G League Ignite is the Spanish Izan Almansa, who this year even participated in the All Star Rising Stars.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver suggested this could already happen during All-Star Weekend, saying at the time that the league was “reevaluating” the Ignite program.

The NBA launched this project with the idea of giving players who are not yet eligible for the draft and who did not want to go to college, the opportunity to play basketball practically professionally and prepare for the draft in the best way. possible.

“Four years ago, we started Ignite to fill a void in the basketball landscape and I’m proud of the contributions we were able to make to that ecosystem,” said G League President Shareef Abdur-Rahim. “With the changing environment in youth and college basketball, now is the right time to take this step.”

The changes in college basketball that Abdur-Rahim talks about are none other than those that allow college players to profit through NIL agreements.

In addition to Almansa, this season’s Ignite roster features other players who are expected to be high in this year’s draft, such as Matas Buzelis and Ron Holland. There are currently nine Ignite veterans on NBA rosters, notable names like Scoot Henderson, Jalen Green, Dyson Daniels and Jonathan Kuminga. The Ignite’s farewell game will be on March 28 against the Ontario Clippers, a game that will not change the team’s final standings much since Today they close the Western Conference standings with a poor 2-28.
