Navigating the Impact of Statins on Performance: Expert Advice for Ambitious Athletes

About me, I’m 32 years old, and since May last year I’ve been ambitiously pursuing endurance sports (cycling). Previously I only drove a few kilometers once or twice a week.

I have been taking antihypertensives since I was a young child, back then they were still found in the competitive sport of judo.

Because of blood pressure as a risk factor and worsening cholesterol levels in my 20s despite changing my diet, giving up alcohol, cigarettes and returning to exercise, statin therapy was started 3 years ago. The last dose increase was last year from 10mg Pravastain to 20mg Simvastatin.

Since I started in May last year, I increased the workload from 20-40 km a week to 150-300 km and was able to increase the FTP from 180-200 (May 23) to 300-320 (Oct 23). The enthusiasm for riding crit races on track bikes increased.

Registered as a Linzen rider this year, at least 5 races and a 5km run are planned. The highlight and goal is a race in Berlin over 42 km, the goal is to compete in category 2 at 42-45km/h.

Now, at the suggestion of a friend, I took a closer look at Stainen. The statements range from a trial from 2013 that reported a decline in mitochondria, to tests with mice with no training effect, to the recommendation of moderate training without any statement about high-intensity training sessions.

Since I do 80% basic training, I am naturally concerned about possible negative effects on improved changes in the muscles in this area. In addition, especially from April onwards, I’ll be training more in and around the threshold with intervals and time intervals on the track. Statements such as “If you are undergoing severe physical exertion, such as marathon running, you should stop taking statins.” (I as a layman cannot assess this. Does a 100km ride at 25-30km/h count as severe physical exertion? We are planning 180km next week and 300km in a row in May.

A review of the values will follow in May. I would like to know how I should approach the conversation, the conditions have changed a lot since last year. I haven’t found a really current overview of the current state of affairs regarding statins and in all likelihood I wouldn’t understand it.

Do statins prevent me from building performance, both at the basic level and at the threshold? If so, how strong? Are there options for compensation?

Is high-intensity training problematic?

What to do if a further increase comes into question?

Are there alternatives?

How are statins currently viewed in relation to ambitious athletes?

Sorry for the wall of text, but of course it’s a bit sobering for an ambitious sportsman and raises a lot of questions, possibly due to misunderstanding.

Best regards
