Navigating Financial Fair Play: Chelsea’s Transfer Dilemma

On the way from a regular Champions League participant to midfield in the Premier League, the new owners of Chelsea FC around club boss Todd Boehly have spent around 1.08 billion euros on new players since 2022. That could lead to problems with the league’s profitability and sustainability rules this summer. According to the “Times“The Blues therefore want to part ways with homegrown players Reece James and Conor Gallagher in June.

Premier League clubs are allowed to make a maximum loss of 105 million pounds (around 120 million euros) within three years or 35 million pounds (around 40 million euros) per season. This sum includes all areas of a club, which also includes transfer expenses. Everton FC and Nottingham Forest recently experienced what happens if this is violated in the form of point deductions.

Important for the balance sheet: Difference between transfer expenses and income

Transfer expenses are assessed in the balance sheet pro rata for the duration of the new signing’s contract. As of today, the 116 million euros that Chelsea paid for Moisés Caicedo in 2023 will be written off until 2031. So every year an eighth of the transfer fee goes into the balance sheet for the respective season. For transfer income, the entire transfer fee is claimed at once.

Sales of home-grown plants are best for the balance sheet because no transfer fee has been paid for them in advance and they therefore have a book value of zero. According to the Times, the Blues hope to achieve around 117 million euros with the transfers of captain James and Gallagher. If the duo finds new clubs by June 30th, 100 percent of these can be offset in the balance sheet for the 2023/24 season.

Havertz, Kovacic & Co.: Chelsea gave up players as early as June 2023

The deadline of June 30th is likely to be particularly important in order to avoid punishment for violations of Financial Fair Play by the league. How to do this is already known at Stamford Bridge from 2023, when, among others, the departures of Mateo Kovacic (Man City), Kalidou Koulibaly (Al-Hilal), Edouard Mendy (Al-Ahli) and Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Milan) took place in June. This also applies to the biggest sale of last summer in the person of Kai Havertz, whose €75 million move to Arsenal was finalized on June 28th.

The fact that transfers are even possible on the island in June is because the transfer window in England has opened early in recent years. As a result, Chelsea would again have time to generate income before the start of the European summer transfer period on July 1st – for accounting reasons, probably at the expense of two of their three most valuable homegrown players. James, who has been part of the squad since 2019 and is therefore the longest-serving player, is under contract until 2028, while Gallagher’s working paper ends in 2025.
