The victory in France was a clear argument for a contract extension with Julian Nagelsmann. But the national coach remains cautious – and makes a recommendation.
National coach Julian Nagelsmann sticks to his cautious line on contract issues. “It’s not out of the question, but it’s not a given either,” said the 36-year-old on ZDF after the 2-0 win against France in Lyon.
The focus is on the home European Championships, after which Nagelsmann’s contract expires. It is important to “go into it with the necessary calm,” said the national coach, and you will have this calmness when “everything has been clarified.”
When asked about a possible success clause for the home tournament if it was extended before the European Championships, Nagelsmann replied that there were “a lot of details” that needed to be clarified, but that he was discussing them internally. “This has nothing to do with financial things, I would like to make that clear,” said Nagelsmann. He spoke much more openly about the contract situation with DFB sports director Rudi Völler (63), whose job currently also ends after the tournament.
“I get along exceptionally well with Rudi on a human level. A very, very good conversationalist, and he always has a good story to tell,” said Nagelsmann. “He always contributes to the cheerfulness of the group, which is also valuable.” He is an “absolute supporter of the idea of extending with Rudi”. Völler himself did not comment conclusively on the question and referred to a decision at a later date.
