National Coach Walid Regragui Discusses Offensive Efficiency, Player Selection, and Future Plans Ahead of Match Against Mauritania

Neil El Aynaoui, lack of offensive efficiency, infirmary… national coach Walid Regragui raised several subjects at a press conference this Monday, March 25, on the eve of the match against Mauritania.

Walid Regragui, national coach, was at a press conference this Monday March 25 at the Grand Stade d’Agadir, on the eve of the friendly match against Mauritania (10 p.m.).

“Mauritania is a team that is growing. We wanted this style of match. This is a team that can create problems for us and make us grow. The match against Angola showed good things in our progress,” the technician first declared.

“I want to see more players, give them playing time because in June, we will have to put a standard team in place. I have to enjoy this match,” added Regragui regarding his starting XI.

Asked about the absence of Mourad Batna, striker from Al-Fateh SC (Saudi Arabia): “I know Mourad Batna very well having trained him for three years at FUS. But given our squad, our bench depth, the players not called up and the young prospects who are arriving, it is complicated to see several players. Age also plays a role (Batna is 33 years old, editor’s note). If he gets back to his level and continues to work… why not?”

The coach especially mentioned Neil El Aynaoui, RC Lens midfielder (22 years old), also eligible to represent France: “he is a player in reflection. He has a priority in his club. He was supposed to be part of the squad for the African Cup, but we let him grow at his request. He wanted to play and earn his place. For this gathering in March, he still wanted time. But at some point, you will have to decide. The problem is with the player, not us. We won’t have to wait long.”

“Eliesse ben Seghir is a crack in France. Attracting him to the selection required a year and a half of work. He was offered an ambitious project including a CAN at home. Like it or not, the World Cup semi-final helped. I’m happy he’s with us,” Regragui said of the 19-year-old AS Monaco striker.

He then mentioned the lack of effectiveness of Youssef En-Nesyri (Sevilla FC) and Ayoub El Kaabi (Olympiakos) with the national team, while they do not encounter similar problems in clubs: “the problem perhaps comes be of me. Or maybe it’s difficult to wear the Lions jersey for them who know its value. Maybe I need to give them more confidence or put them in competition with other players.”

The technician then expressed his joy at being in Agadir, also implying that the team would be back in June. He also denied any tension between Hakim Ziyech and Brahim Diaz.

Finally, he announces that “Adli is ready, there are no wounded in our ranks.”
