Nadal, Alcaraz, Djokovic and Swiatek, registered for the Mutua Madrid Open 2024

The Spanish tennis players Rafa Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz and Paula Badosa; the Serbian Novak Djokovic; the Polish Iga Swiatek; or the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka are some of the participants registered for the next edition of the Mutua Madrid Open, of the ATP Masters 1,000 and WTA 1,000 categories and which will be held from April 22 to May 5 at La Caja Mágica in the Spanish capital.

The ATP and the WTA announced this Tuesday the list of players registered to compete in the 2024 edition, in which both Alcaraz and Sabalenka will have the opportunity to defend the crowns won in 2023 on the Madrid clay court.

In addition to the Murcian, winner of the last two editions, there will also be Nadal, the man with the most titles in Madrid (2005, 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2017); the current world number one, Novak Djokovic, who holds three trophies in the Spanish capital (2011, 2016 and 2019); the Italian Jannik Sinner, current champion of the Australian Open; or the German Alexander Zverev, two-time champion in the Caja Mágica (2018 and 2021).

In addition, other candidates such as the Russians Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, the Danish Holger Rune, the Norwegian Casper Ruud and the Australian Alex de Miñaur will compete, and men such as the Croatian Marin Cilic, the Canadian Denis Shapovalov and the Italian Matteo Berrettini will also be part of the poster thanks to the protected ranking. Alejandro Davidovich, Roberto Carballés and Jaume Munar will be part of the Spanish ‘Armada’ in the men’s draw along with Nadal and Alcaraz.

For her part, Sabalenka, who has won two of the last three editions, will try to repeat, struggling against the threat of the world number one, Iga Swiatek, a finalist in 2023. There will also be the Tunisian Ons Jabeur, who won in 2022; the Americans Jessica Pegula -finalist in 2022- and Coco Gauff, the Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the Greek Maria Sakkari or the Chinese Qinwen Zheng. Paula Badosa and Sara Sorribes will be the Spanish representatives in the women’s team.

The cut line in the ATP Masters 1,000 is established by the Italian Luciano Darderi as number 75 in the world, while the WTA 1,000 has Taylor Townsend, 72 in the world ranking, as the last player to enter the main draw.
