Moscow attack: friendly football match between Russia and Paraguay canceled

The Russia-Paraguay friendly match, scheduled for Monday in Moscow, was canceled after the armed attack in Krasnogorsk, a suburb of Moscow, claimed by the jihadist group Islamic State and which left more than 60 dead, announced Saturday the Russian Football Union (RFS).

“Due to the attack” which took place Friday evening in a concert hall in the suburbs of Moscow, “the Russian Football Union and the Paraguayan Football Association have decided to cancel the friendly match between the Russian and Paraguayan selections, RFS said in a press release. “The match cannot take place in March because the FIFA window ends on Tuesday and the national team players must return to their clubs,” she continued, also indicating a desire to organize the meeting at a later date .

60 dead in fire

The match, which was to take place on Monday at 4 p.m. at the Dynamo stadium in Moscow, could be organized at a later date, according to the same source. More than 60 people were killed and 115 injured Friday evening in an armed attack followed by a massive fire at the Crocus City Hall concert hall in Krasnogorsk, a suburb of Moscow, which was claimed by IS.

The mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, immediately announced the cancellation of all public events this weekend. A few days earlier, the Russian team won at home against Serbia (4-0) in the VTB Arena. The same stadium which was to host the match against Paraguay.
