Crisis in Marseille: Rodolphe Saadé Faces Backlash in Ownership Bid

Number 1 sponsor of OM and presented as one of the future investors in the takeover of the Marseille club, Rodolphe Saadé is experiencing a first major crisis in Marseille.

The owner of CGA CGM made headlines last week by announcing that it had entered into negotiations to buy the channels of the Altice Media group, including RMC and BFM. Already owner of Provence, a powerful Marseille daily whose boundless passion for OM is known and which at one time belonged to Bernard Tapie, Rodolphe Saadé has many assets to become the possible man of the football club. Because all of this is part of a phase of very rapid development for the multi-billionaire whose family made its fortune in maritime freight. It is also in this context that Rodolphe Saadé became the jersey sponsor of Olympique de Marseille and that his name constantly comes up in discussions for the purchase of OM from Frank McCourt.

Whether directly, or as part of a round table with Saudi investors, the businessman is always cited as close to the file, his financial power and his business acumen making him an ideal candidate. However, this weekend, he did not only make friends in Marseille and this materialized this Saturday in an absence from daily life Provence at the newsstands. The reason ? The front page of the regional daily on Marseille on Thursday, which was not to the taste of Rodolphe Saadé according to several sources, while we know that the latter is close to Emmanuel Macron….himself a supporter of the ‘OM.

Provence on unlimited strike, Marseille deprived of its newspaper

The day after the Head of State’s visit to Marseille, the local media headlined: “ He left and we are still here… » with the photo, from behind, of two dealers in front of whom a police officer passed. And it is an understatement to say that this front page did not please the management of the daily, even to the point that on Friday, Aurélie Viers, editorial director of Provence, was laid off for a week and summoned for an interview prior to dismissal. A decision which provoked an immediate strike by journalists from Rodolphe Saadé’s media, causing the total absence of the daily newspaper in Marseille and the region.

This interventionism is troubling to say the least at a time when Rodolphe Saadé is going to take on some big media outlets. And this very clearly damages the image of the man who is announced as the possible number 1 favorite to buy Olympique de Marseille. In Marseille, we love OM, but we also love Provencewho is often the itch of the Marseille club or its number 1 supporter. And see this media
