The verdict from the DFB sports court came on Tuesday. Moritz-Broni Kwarteng, who received a red card just 14 minutes after being substituted for a frustrating foul on Lois Openda, was suspended for three games.
But it’s not just these three games that Kwarteng will miss. For the 25-year-old, the season is completely over. Because Kwarteng also suffered a knee injury during his impetuous action against Openda.
The VfL player “injured himself in the scene on which the verdict was based and suffered a partial rupture of the medial ligament in his knee,” as the club announced on Wednesday. “VfL will miss him at least until the end of the season.”
Regardless of the injury, Bochum did not agree to the DFB control committee’s request for a three-game suspension, but the requested reduction in punishment was not given. The DFB sports court had confirmed the ban, although from VfL Bochum’s point of view “it was not a case of violence on the part of the player”. However, the Bundesliga club will not lodge an appeal with the sports court due to the injury.

We will give him the best possible medical support so that he can attack again for the new season.” Kwarteng, who came from second division club Magdeburg in the summer of 2023, has made eleven appearances so far, but no game has lasted longer than 90 minutes.
