Mohmoud Dahoud Chooses Syrian National Team Over Germany: ‘Close to My Heart’

On Thursday, Julian Nagelsmann is expected to nominate four players from VfB Stuttgart. Mo Dahoud is not there. He has closed the DFB-Elf chapter for himself.

VfB professional Mohmoud Dahoud, who is on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, will play for the Syrian national team in the future. As the pay TV channel Sky reported on Wednesday evening, the 28-year-old has already informed the Syrian association of his decision.

In 2020, Dahoud, then a Borussia Dortmund player, played two international matches for Germany under world champion coach Joachim Löw – but only in friendly matches, which means he is not fixed and can change associations.

Dahoud: “I’m really looking forward to this project that’s close to my heart”

“Syria is my family’s country of origin and ultimately also my birth country. And I learned from my family early on how privileged we are to live in Germany and at the same time how important it is to bring joy to the people in Syria. I would like to do that and I’m really looking forward to this project that’s close to my heart,” he said on Sky.

Dahoud became European champion with the German U21 in 2017, but to date it has not been enough for a competitive game with the senior national team. It is not yet clear when the midfielder will make his debut. Syria will face Myanmar in two international matches in March.

Instead of Dahoud, four other VfB Stuttgart players are expected to be nominated on Thursday. In addition to Chris Führich, who celebrated his debut in the national dress on the USA trip last year, Deniz Undav, Waldemar Anton and Maximilian Mittelstädt are also expected to receive an invitation.
