Mitchell Trubisky Re-Signs with Buffalo Bills After Release from Steelers

Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is back with the Buffalo Bills after agreeing to terms on a new contract.

Tim Graham first reported that the two sides were talking on Wednesday. Mike Grafolo of NFL Network later confirmed the news. Terms were not immediately disclosed.

Trubisky, who spent the last two seasons in Pittsburgh, was released by the Steelers in February and became a free agent. He had two more years on his contract and was supposed to remain with the franchise through 2025.

Pittsburgh’s decision to release Trubisky left Kenny Pickett the only quarterback on the Steelers roster, although general manager Omar Khan told reporters the team wants to re-sign impending free agent Mason Rudolph.

Trubisky entered the NFL in 2017 as the No. 2 overall pick, landing with the Chicago Bears. He spent four seasons in Chicago, starting 50 of 51 games before the two parted ways ahead of the 2021 campaign.

His best season in Chicago came in 2018 when he completed 66.6 percent of his passes for 3,223 yards and 24 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 14 games en route to a Pro Bowl selection.

The 29-year-old then signed a one-year contract with the Bills to back up Josh Allen during the 2021 season before joining the Steelers in 2022, where he was given the first opportunity to serve as Ben Roethlisberger’s replacement.

Trubisky started Pittsburgh’s first four games in 2022 before being benched in favor of a then-rookie Pickett. He ended up starting five games and appearing in seven, completing 65 percent of his passes for 1,252 yards and four touchdowns against five interceptions.

Trubisky went on to start two of five games in 2023, completing 62.6 percent of his passes fro 632 yards and four touchdowns against five interceptions. Pittsburgh went 0-2 in his starts.

Now with the Bills, Trubisky figures to be a backup for Allen once again. He has shown that he’s not starter material, but he continues to be a solid backup who can fill in when called upon and at least give his team a chance to win.
