Inter Miami celebrates the biggest win in the club’s young history, Lionel Messi scores his first brace in the MLS. But the focus is on the referee, who was removed five hours before kick-off.

Things have been going haywire recently in Major League Soccer (MLS). The Professional Referee Organization (PRO) is currently arguing with the Professional Soccer Referees Association (PSRA) over a new collective agreement. As long as negotiations drag on, the games will be officiated by replacement referees from the college and youth levels, who are not normally part of the MLS. This doesn’t always work without noise.

For the Florida duel between Inter Miami and the league appointed Brazilian referee Guiherme Ceretta as game manager. The appointment was announced on Saturday morning (local time). A little later, pictures of Ceretta circulating on social media showed the referee wearing an Inter Miami jersey.

Just three hours later, the PRO reacted and withdrew Ceretta from the game. “Referee Guiherme Ceretta was removed from the game due to a possible conflict,” the organization said in a statement to The Athletic. Instead, Jamie Herrera moved up. The financial negotiations between the referees and the association are due to be completed by March 11th.

Premiere for Messi – Gressel prepares two goals

As hectic as the developments before the game were, Inter Miami subsequently won against Orlando with ease. Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez each scored two goals in the 5-0 (3-0). It was the first double in the MLS for both stars. Robert Taylor scored the fifth goal, and German-born US international Julian Gressel prepared two goals.

“He knows everything about me. I think we will continue to work together so well in the future,” said Suarez about reuniting with Messi. The Uruguayan moved from Gremio Porto Alegre to Miami in January. Four former FC Barcelona players are now under contract with co-owner David Beckham’s club: Messi, Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.
