Stefanos Tsitsipas can already concentrate on Rome
Triumph in Monte-Carlo, at least a place in the final in Barcelona, but now the early exit in Madrid: That’s Stefanos Tsitsipas’ 2024 clay court season so far. The sixth-seeded Greek had to admit defeat to the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro 4:6 and 4:6 on Saturday with the roof closed over the Arantxa Sanchez Court and has to console himself with the prospect of greater success at the tournament in Rome.
Surprise winner Monteiro will face either Jiri Lehecka or Hamad Medjedovic in the third round.
Despite the clear result, the second set in particular developed quite dramatically. At 5:3 and on his own serve, Tsitsipas had to fend off two match points and then had the chance for the re-break. But the fourth match point led Thiago Monteiro into the next round.
Parallel to this match, Sebastian Korda had no problems with Max Purcell at 6:3 and 6:3.
