Medvedev Victorious over Jarry in Miami Open Quarterfinals

The Chilean Nicolás Jarry, number 23 in the world, could not beat the Russian this Wednesday Daniil Medvedev (n.4), who will seek a place in the final of the Miami Open against the Italian Jannik Sinner (n.3).

Jarry concluded his great role in the Florida Masters 1,000 with a defeat in the quarterfinals against the current champion from Miami by 6-2 and 7-6(7) in one hour and 40 minutes.

Medvedev and Sinner will meet again in Miami after competing last year in the final, where Moscow ended up winning.

The Russian dominates the previous ones (6-4) but the Italian has won his last four duels and the last one was undoubtedly the most important of all: the final of the Australian Open this year, which was the first ‘big’ one for Sinner.

To add more gunpowder to this explosive match, Medvedev and Sinner have faced each other in five finals in total with two wins for the Russian (Rotterdam and Miami) and three for the transalpine (Beijing, Vienna and Australian Open).

On the other side of the draw, the quarterfinals will be played this Thursday between the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz (n.2) and the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (n.12) and between the German Alexander Zverev (n.5) and the surprising Hungarian Fábián Marozsán (n.57).

Despite the elimination, Jarry equaled his best result in a 1,000 Masters in Miami, since until now he had only reached the quarterfinals of tournaments of this caliber on one occasion (Shanghai, 2023).

At night time of an important match, Jarry had in front of him a fight of giants not only because of Medvedev’s undoubted quality but also because both tennis players measure no less than 1.98 meters.

The only precedent between them was far away: a victory for Medvedev in Barcelona in 2019.

Jarry started with aplomb, exhibiting confidence in his serve and not letting the stage intimidate him, but Medvedev is one of the toughest rivals on the circuit, an inexhaustible tennis player capable of returning impossible shots and who requires an extra dose of both patience and precision. .

A 15-40 in his second turn at service was the first important challenge for the man from Santiago. He responded well by saving two break balls, but on the third he sent a backhand into the net and lost serve (3-1).

Jarry had the majority of the public in his favor and the Chilean fans did not stop cheering him on with shouts of “Come on, Nico.”

However, he was paying dearly for his mistakes. before an undaunted, implacable and imposing Medvedev who did not have to face a single break ball against him in the entire first set.

Jarry was asked by his team to take more risks, but he got stuck again in some very inappropriate errors and, with a forehand that went too long, he lost his serve once again and Medvedev closed the first set in 32 minutes (6 -2).

The Chilean did not lower his arms, as at the beginning of the second set he seemed to successfully take refuge in the combination of serve and climb to the net.

Medvedev continued without doubts, like a concrete wall without a single crack on its surface.. But Jarry increased his performance from the back of the court, once again exhibited great strength on his serve, limited his unforced errors and made it clear that he would not leave Miami without putting up a good fight.

“Be calm, trust, you’re much better,” his team told Jarry. “One by one. Come on, come on.”

His first great moment came at 40-40 and 4-4 on the scoreboard, but Medvedev does not understand relaxation: he unleashed two thunderclaps with his serve and removed any danger (5-4).

He had an even clearer option with a 30-40 and 5-5 after a miraculous lob. Again, the Russian also saved it with amazing solvency (6-5).

Clearly from less to more throughout the evening, Jarry managed to save two match points against in a vibrant tie break but finally succumbed to Medvedev who closed a very solid performance.

Before starting the game, Jarry starred in one of the anecdotes of the day in Miami when his serve during the warm-up hit a ball girl. The Chilean ran immediately and spoke to the young woman to make sure she was okay.
