Medvedev Advances to Semifinals at Miami Masters 1000, Set to Face Sinner

The Russian Daniil Medvedev managed to close his quarter-final match in the tiebreaker of the second set, winning 6-2, 7-6 (7) against the Chilean Nicolas Jarry (no. 23), Wednesday evening at the Masters 1000 of Miami.

The fourth racket in the world will face in the semi-finals the Italian Jannik Sinner (world no. 3), who beat the Czech Tomas Machac (no. 60) 6-4, 6-2.

Medvedev is aiming for a third final in his last four tournaments and hopes to defend one of his titles for the first time in his career.

He only made 3 unforced errors compared to 14 for his rival in the first set. Jarry, however, came back strong and came within two points of snatching the second set in the tiebreaker. Medvedev won 80% of his points on first serve and was not brought to 40-40 until the ninth game of the second set. Jarry then got his only chance to break in the 11th game and could have led 6-5, but the Russian rallied.

Sinner has only lost one match since the start of the year, in the semi-final of the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells against Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (no. 2).

Against Machac, Sinner made the break in the first game. But the Czech who was playing the third quarter-final of his career on the ATP circuit, the first in Masters 1000, while waiting for better, immediately resumed the break.

The winner of the Australian Open had to wait until the seventh game to steal Machac’s serve again and took 52 minutes to win the first set 6-4, with a shutout.

In the second set, Sinner clearly took the upper hand. Sovereign on his serve, he took twice in a row that of an opponent suffering more and more, at 1-1 then 3-1, to finally win 6-4, 6-2 in 1 h 31 min.

“It was a really tough match, but I’m happy with my performance,” Sinner said.

The 22-year-old Sinner said Machac (60th) served well early in the match and his aggressiveness kept things close for a while. But the Italian ultimately broke his opponent four times to take control of the duel.

“I always say that when you feel good on the court, it’s easy to play tennis,” added the winner. But it starts with a workout where you feel worse and you keep training to make a difference. At the moment, I feel really good on the pitch. »
