World No. 4 and defending champion Daniil Medvedev qualified for the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 in Miami by defeating Dominik Koepfer in straight sets. He will face Nicolas Jarry, who defeated Casper Ruud. Jannik Sinner also qualified at the expense of Christopher O’Connell.

Sixth participation in the Miami Masters 1000 for Daniil Medvedev, and fourth quarter-final. The Russian, winner of the tournament last year against Jannik Sinner, won his round of 16 to the detriment of Dominik Koepfer, 50th in the world and defeater of Sebastian Baez and Ugo Humbert in the previous rounds. The world No. 4 won 7-6, 6-0 in 1h30 and therefore beat the German for the third time in three matches. But he suffered during the first hour of play. Koepfer indeed gave him a hard time in the first set, where he pushed him until the decisive game. Medvedev had managed the first break of the match, at 1-1, but the German player immediately recovered. The games then passed on both sides, and the two men were decided in a tie-break. A tie-break in which Koepfer led 4-0, which caused Medvedev to become very angry with his clan. But it did him good, as he scored five points in a row, then won 7-5. This loss of the decisive game proved to be a massive blow for the German player, who no longer scored a single game! Medvedev broke three times in five occasions in the second set and therefore won his ticket to the quarter-finals, where Nicolas Jarry awaits him.

Ruud at the trap, Sinner does not tremble

The Chilean, 23rd in the world, created a surprise by eliminating No. 8, Casper Ruud, with a score of 7-6, 6-3 in 1h49. Author of eight aces in total, Jarry broke at the start of the match, but saw the Norwegian equalize at 3-3 then take his opponent to the tie-break. And Jarry won this decisive game, winning five points in a row from 2-3 (7-3). On his momentum, the Chilean, who had already missed two chances at 2-1, broke at 3-2 and took off in this meeting, before concluding at 5-3 without trembling. Medvedev left only seven games to Jarry during their only confrontation, on the clay of Barcelona in 2019. Also note at the start of the program in Miami the victory of Tomas Machac, 60th in the world, against Matteo Arnaldi, 38th. The Czech, who defeated Andy Murray in the previous round after a crazy match, won with a score of 6-3, 6-3 in 1h19 without having the slightest break point to defend. The task will be much more difficult for him in the next round, as he will face world No. 3 Jannik Sinner. The Italian eliminated No. 66 Christopher O’Connell with a score of 6-4, 6-3 in 1h42 to earn his ticket to the quarters. Broken at the start of the match, the winner of the Australian Open managed to equalize at 4-4, after having missed two break opportunities in previous games. On his momentum, he again took the Australian’s serve at the best time, at 5-4, to pocket the first set. In the second, he quickly led 3-0 losing only three points, and he managed to maintain his lead until the end, winning on his third match point. So here he is in the quarterfinals, where he will face Machac for the very first time.
