March Madness Madness: No Perfect Brackets Survive First Round of 2024 Tournament

Impossible to talk about March Madness without talking about the brackets that go with it. Every year in March, basketball fans fill the final table of the competition in the (tiny) hope of achieving a “perfect”. It will not be for 2024, since no bracket survived the first round of the competition.

The 32 games of the first round of March Madness have delivered their verdict, with quite a few surprises in store. Kentucky which falls from the start, Auburn which is beaten by Yale, James Madison which beats Wisconsin… Surprises which have plagued all the brackets of the basketball planet, and there are more than 30 million of them.

Just like that, there are ZERO perfect brackets left 🤯#MarchMadness pic.twitter.com/VRrtVf8mpH

A nice little anecdote: it was the team of Frenchman Kalifa Sakho – namely Utah State – which eliminated the very last bracket by beating TCU 88-72. And ironically, the Aggies were theoretically favorites in this match because they were better placed than their opponent in the March Madness table (#8 vs #9).

This game between Utah State and TCU was the penultimate of the first round. What does it mean ? That means that there is still a guy – or a girl – who achieved a magnificent 30/30 before taking home the honors. Honestly, hats off.

As a reminder, the all-time record is 49 consecutive good predictions (out of 63 matches in total in the tournament). It dates from 2019 and is by Gregg Nigl, a neuropsychologist based in Columbus, Ohio.
