Manuel Lombardo Shines on Day 2 of Grand Slam Tashkent 2024

The curtain fell on second day of the Grand Slam Tashkent 2024, scheduled until tomorrow, Sunday 3 March, on the tatamis of the Humo Arena and valid as the fourth seasonal event of the Judo World Tour. A maximum of 1000 points are up for grabs (awarded to the winners of each category), which are fundamental in terms of Olympic qualification ranking for the Paris Games. Four categories on day-2: –73 kg and -81 kg men; -63 kg and -70 kg women.

On the eve of the objective was clear: the podium for Manuel Lombardo. Second seed in the -73 kg draw, the 25-year-old from Turin wanted to give himself an answer. The Uzbek tatami gave him what he wanted and it was his a ride you win. The flash victory against the Thai Masayuki Terada (ippon after 33″) started the dancing. The next to fall were the Azerbaijanis Ibrahim Aliyevfolded with a waza-ari in the Golden Score, the Polish Adam Stodolski (ippon after 1’20”) and in the semi-final the host, Shakhram Akhadov (ippon after 1’30”).

In the final act the challenge against the Russian Daniil Lavrentev it was very tight and the shido were decisive in the fight for the Golden Score. Very good Lombardo in forcing his rival into a defensive position and conquering the third career Grand Slam, after the 2023 claims in Antalya and the first dated 24 October 2019 in Abu Dhabi, in the latter case in a different weight category (-66 kg). Eighth podium for him in an event of this kind. A result that projects him to second place in the world ranking, now giving him the certainty of arriving at the Games as the top seed.

Less road to Edoardo Mella in the same category: the Polish defeated Ksawery Morka (waza-ari), was the representative of Tajikistan, Mahamadsharif Najmudinov to prevail (waza-ari / ippon). The category podium was completed by the home team Akhadov and Obidkhon Nomanov. Little to do in the men’s -81 kg for Giacomo Gambaimmediately beaten by the Moldovan Mihail Latisev per waza-ari (te-waza / Seoi-otoshi). Matthias Casse he triumphed in a hard-fought Final against the Austrian Shamil Borchashvilisanctioned for irregular move.

In the women’s -63 kg the adventure of Savita Russo and Flavia Favorini ended in the round of 16: the first, after the successes against the Kazakh team Kristina Sotnikova and the fearsome Brazilian Ketleyn Quadroswas blocked by the Japanese Momo Tatsukawa, scoring with an Ashi-waza / Ko-soto-gake; Favorini was defeated by the Croatian instead Iva Oberanafter the statements against the Brazilian Gabriella Moraes and Azerbaijani Aytaj Gardashkhanli, for ippon (Shime-waza / Okuri-eri-jime). A real shame for the latter, who initially took the lead with a waza-ari (te-waza / Seoi-otoshi). A category in which the French was Clarisse Agbegnenou to win, defeating the Japanese Tatsukawa in the final match.

In the women’s – 70 kg in which the German was Miriam Butkereit to raise his voice, the path of Irene Pedrotti he stopped at the first meeting, opposing the North Korean Song Hui Mun. A comparison decided by the three shido (Hold-Trouser-Leg) in the Golden Score.
