Macháč’s lifetime tournament at the Masters in Miami was ended by favorite Sinner in the quarterfinals

ATP MIAMI – Tomáš Macháč (23) did not become only the second conqueror of Jannik Sinner (22) this year and did not add another valuable scalp in Miami. At the Masters 1000 in Florida, in his biggest quarter-final of his career, he bravely resisted the world trio for a few tens of minutes, but was unable to significantly trouble the Italian favorite and lost 4:6, 2:6.

Macháč – Sinner 4:6, 2:6

In Miami, Tomáš Macháč started only the third time in his career at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament and thanks to the premier scalp of TOP 10 player Andrej Rubljov or the winning battle with three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray, he exceeded his maximum three times. In his biggest quarter-final, however, he already faced this year’s most successful player in the world, Jannik Sinner, and the Italian was beyond his strength.

The 23-year-old Macháč initially responded to a lost serve and equalized at 1:1. At 3:3, however, he lost serve for the second time after the fight, Sinner gradually found a recipe for a lesser-known opponent and broke the resistance of the Czech tennis player. He was almost flawless on the serve, he was dangerous on the return and after an hour and a half he won 6:4, 6:2.

“I’ve never played him, so I didn’t know what to expect from the match. I didn’t have his game loaded, so I was looking for a while to see what might work. The score might be a little confusing because it was pretty even, but I was better at the big points “ Sinner commented.

Playing under constant pressure, Macháč committed 31 unforced errors and played only 12 winning shots, four less than the Italian who was a year younger.

Macháč played the quarterfinals on the ATP circuit for the fourth time in his career and for the first time outside the tournaments of the lowest ATP 250 category. Before that, he did not even reach the semifinals in Houston 2023, Stockholm 2023 and Marseille 2024.

After his most successful event to date, the native of Beroun will enter the clay spring as a member of the TOP 50. Next week in Marrakesh, Morocco, he will not perform as originally planned, after a short rest he will prepare for the qualification of the next Masters event in Monte Carlo.

Sinner have won 33 of their last 35 games. This year he was the first to record 20 wins, his only defeat was against Carlos Alcaraz. He starts in Miami for the fourth time in his career and can follow up on the finals from 2021 and 2023. This year he will play for it in revenge for the defeat of last year’s title fight with Daniil Medvedev from Russia or with the Chilean Nicolas Jarry.

“I really like this tournament. I played my first Masters final here and it’s nice to be in the top four again. I feel good physically, I’m not tired and I’m looking forward to the next match,” Sinner added.
