Luxury Cars to German Brands: Inside the Trend of HSV Players’ Car Choices

There used to be a lot of Bentleys in the HSV players’ parking lot. Aaron Hunt (37) drove up in a Ferrari. Holland’s vice world champion Nigel de Jong (39), who himself dealt in exclusive cars for years, had a penchant for very special cars.

The cars in Volkspark are now a little smaller. This may be because the professionals in the second division no longer earn as well as the former stars in successful years in the European Cup.

But it could also be a trend. “Players are now leaning heavily towards German premium brands. This is also the case in the Bundesliga. “You don’t want to immediately attract attention everywhere,” says Ben Alexander Krol (45).

For many football professionals, Krol is something of a trusted man when it comes to horsepower. The customer advisor supplies 60 players with vehicles through the Mercedes dealer Sternpartner. He also still has first-class contacts with his former employer BMW.

The VIP salesperson has the most customers at Hamburger SV. Around 15 kickers rely on his services. Even ex-HSV coach Tim Walter (48) and Rauten veteran Miro Zadach (63), supervisors and bus drivers get in touch if they need a vehicle for private purposes.

Once or twice a month, Krol sits in a stadium box at HSV during the day. He uses it as an office. Then the professionals can come directly to him with their wishes. Otherwise communication takes place via WhatsApp, Instagram or telephone.

Krol offers players an all-round package. From sales (around 80 percent are leasing deals) to insurance and inspection. Then the seller drives up to the stadium and exchanges the car for a replacement vehicle. He says: “The boys just need to concentrate on football.”

When St. Pauli professional Elias Saad (24) has a flat tire recently, Krol is there just as he is when a leased vehicle needs to be picked up from France because the player is now under contract there. That was the case with ex-HSV keeper Julian Pollersbeck (29, now Magdeburg).

The secret car wishes of the HSV stars

The professionals are particularly concerned with individuality. Special leather seats. A matt colored exterior paint (current trend grey). Special rims that the manufacturer does not offer and must be purchased separately. A set can cost between 8,000 and 10,000 euros.

Former HSV captain Tim Leibold (30, now Sporting Kansas City) and Pollersbeck even had their iDrive controller decorated with a Swarovski gemstone.

The VIP seller’s services are valued in the foosball industry. In 2020, Pollersbeck was the first customer with a BMW X6. Players from many clubs now rely on his services. For example from Cologne, Nuremberg, Kaiserslautern, Fürth, Paderborn, Bielefeld, Magdeburg and from FC St. Pauli.

Not all players want a big and fast car. HSV attacker Andras Nemeth (21) chose the smallest model that BMW offers – a 1 Series. Of course that will also be delivered.
