Lucas Pouille’s Strong Start in California Ends in Defeat

Three consecutive victories, a place in the big picture: Lucas Pouille will not have made the trip to California for nothing. The 273rd ATP player remembered the good memories of the circuit but, last night, against Stefanos Tsitsipas, the step was too high. Pouille therefore stops in the 2nd round after a scathing defeat (6-3, 6-2). Pouille did not get any break points, never finding the key against an opponent who dominated him for the fourth time in as many matches. Lacking success on his first ball (53%), he suffered the Greek’s forehand attacks.

The 30-year-old Frenchman, semi-finalist at the Australian Open in 2019, however won three matches in California coming out of qualifying before taking out German Daniel Altmaier, beating members of the Top 100 for the first time for almost two years. Enough to lay the foundations for a lasting return to the high level?
