Lecce sacked coach Roberto D’Aversa for headbutting a Verona player

Lecce sacked coach Roberto D’Aversa for “the events that occurred at the end of the Lecce-Verona match”. On Sunday after a Serie A match with Verona (lost 0-1 by Lecce), D’Aversa had thrown a headbutt at Verona striker Thomas Henry, who was arguing with Lecce defender Marin Pongracic. Initially, in an interview with Sky, D’Aversa had said that his intent “was to divide everyone”, but that Henry had “continued to provoke”. In a subsequent post published on Instagram, D’Aversa wrote that he had “come into head-to-head contact with Henry” and not hit him “with a headbutt”.

Already on Sunday many sports newspapers had speculated about his dismissal: the club confirmed it on Monday morning with a short statement thanking the coach and his staff for the work done. According to sports newspapers, the most likely replacement for him is former footballer Leonardo Semplici, coach of Cagliari in 2021 and Spezia in 2023.
