Latvian Women’s National Ice Hockey Team Gears Up for World Championship Under Coach Hannu Saintula

Finnish specialist Hannu Saintula is the head coach of the Latvian women’s national team. Under the leadership of Hannu, in the period from March 24 to March 26, 2024, the final stage of preparation will take place, after which the composition of the Latvian women’s ice hockey team for participation in the World Championship will be announced.

In the “Olainfarm” team, the majority are women. In addition, we also have more women than men in the positions of department heads. We have always known that gender is not what determines someone’s competence, skills or capabilities. We believe that, just as Latvia sympathizes with the youth and men’s national teams, together we will be able to support the Latvian women’s national team as well, and with active sympathy both in the hall and on live broadcasts, we will create a great and inspiring hockey spring in Latvia,” Juris Bundulis, chairman of the board of JSC “Olainfarm” calls to support and inspire the women’s national team.

According to LHF general secretary Roberts Plūjejs, women’s hockey in Latvia is developing, with the number of players also increasing. “We expect that the world championship tournament will give an even bigger boost to the growth of women’s hockey in Latvia. We are already a hockey superpower and we can be proud not only of the men’s and youth national teams, but also of the convincing growth of the women’s national team and the successfully held tournaments in 2023. “We are happy that the women’s national team’s start in the championship this year will also be supported by “Olainfarm”, which serves as an additional inspiration and confirmation of our faith in the future of women’s hockey in Latvia,” says Plūjejs.

The Latvian national team will play its first match at the World Championship on March 31 against the strong Slovakian team, which is ranked 16th in the world. Our national team will face Italy on April 1, Slovenia on April 3, Poland on April 5 and Great Britain on April 6.
