Latvian Student Sets New Triple Jump Record at Texas Tech University

Lasmane, a student of the Texas Technological University, won with a result of 14.47 meters, which is 32 centimeters further than the Latvian record she achieved in the 2021 final competition. Before the weekend competition, only four athletes in the world had jumped further than Lasman this season, three of them achieving their result with prize-winning positions at the World Indoor Athletics Championships.

After this year’s changes in the rules of the World Athletics Union (“World Athletics”), there is no difference in jumping disciplines and shot put – records are achieved indoors or outdoors. All the results are in one list – in the summer these results achieved in the winter will be improved or supplemented with those achieved in open-air stadiums. Thus, currently there is actually only one Latvian record in the triple jump – 14.76 meters, which was achieved by Gundega Sproģe in 1997 in Sheffield.

Lasmane jumped 13.96 meters in the first attempt, 14.24 meters in the second, and 14.47 meters in the third. The last three attempts were not counted for the Latvian.

The sixth place with a new personal record was won by Darya Sopova, a student of the University of Illinois, who scored her second and third attempts at a distance of 13.18 and 13.58 meters, respectively.

Sweden’s Emilija Sjestrand, representing the San Jose State University, became the runner-up with a jump of 13.72 meters, while Mikeisha Velkam, a student at the University of Georgia, from St. Vincent and the Grenadines won the bronze with a centimeter closer result.

15 athletes participated in the finals.

It has already been reported that Kristīne Blaževiča and Elīza Kraukle won the third and fifth place respectively in the pentathlon on Friday.
