Latina’s Defensive Strength Shines in Victory over Picerno

Since 1992 he has been a collaborator of “Il Messaggero”, since 2009 he has collaborated with the “Gazzetta dello Sport”. He starts out writing about baseball, then gives in to the tentacles of football.

Silence… the numbers speak. With just 5 games to go until the end of the regular season, more than the comments, the numbers made even more positive by the victory on the Picerno pitch (0-2) are valid for Latina. The statistics say that Latina has won 4 of the last 5 away matches, they highlight that with last Sunday’s match there are 10 clean sheets of the season, which despite the Nerazzurri team occupying the same position in the standings, compared to last season they have conquered 6 points more with a goal difference that went from -7 (31 goals scored, 38 conceded) to -2 (38 goals scored, 40 conceded). A comparison with the first season in Serie C is not even worth suggesting: after 33 days, Latina in the 2012/2022 season occupied twelfth position, with 41 points. In Picerno, Latina reiterated the positive trend of its away performances which have earned it 28 points so far, placing it in third place in the ranking of “Corsair” teams, behind Juve Stabia (32) and Avellino (31). It’s a shame that the Nerazzurri disappoint at the Francioni, with 20 points within friendly walls (?) they only did better than Monterosi (18), Monopoli (16) and Brindisi (7).

An internal trend that risks jeopardizing a positive season. If on the one hand qualification for the play-offs does not seem to be in question given the 5 point advantage over Cerignola and the 6 over Sorrento, the objective of improving on last season’s 8th place is instead in the balance considering the sole advantage over Crotone and 3 over Foggia, next Saturday’s guest of Francioni.

As for Picerno’s game, the Nerazzurri’s performance brought to mind the maxim of John Madden, coach of the NFL (National Football League): “attack sells tickets, but defense wins games”. In my opinion, it was mainly the defensive department that won in Lucania, with Guadagno above all well supported by his team mates who in the second half were able to resist the onslaught of the fort put in place by their opponents. In this, Latina reminded me of Juve Stabia, its cynicism, its ability to strike with just a few moves, its defense of the result albeit achieved with less apprehension than the Nerazzurri did.

Fontana’s visions were right as he also gave up a role midfielder in Picerno and raised Di Livio in support of Mastroianni. In fact, the two plays that resulted in the winning goals were made by the captain, although only the assist on Crecco’s goal was fully attributable to him. And in support of the Nerazzurri coach’s visionary tactics there is also Cortinovis’ goal, the first ever among professionals, and the movements that led him to the winning conclusion with a throw-in. A sign that the density in the area allows for unpredictable solutions as long as it is the result of tactical reasoning and not the extemporaneousness of the individual.

From a Foggia perspective, however, a warning comes from Picerno: the scoring opportunities that the Lucanians had at their disposal cannot be conceded, luck is not always as benevolent as last Sunday.
