Late-inning collapse haunts Toronto Blue Jays in loss to Baltimore Orioles

The Toronto Blue Jays looked in control after six innings Tuesday afternoon against the Baltimore Orioles, but a rough day from the relief team ultimately led Toronto to a 13-8 loss.

Arriving in the seventh inning, Brandon Eisert allowed three hits and three earned runs in one and two-thirds innings of work to allow the Orioles to take the lead for good. Defeat and sabotage also went to his record.

Connor Cooke didn’t do better in relief of Eisert, as he allowed six hits and five earned runs in just two-thirds innings of work.

The performance of the Jays relievers is not very encouraging after the injuries to Jordan Romano and Erik Swanson, who will not be able to pitch for at least a few days.

Starter Chris Bassitt was removed from the game after three and a third innings of work. He allowed seven hits as well as four earned runs, in addition to striking out four batters.

On Tuesday, the Blue Jays announced that Jose Berrios would be the starting pitcher for the opening game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Offensively, George Springer drove in two runs and had two hits, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit one ball to safety in two at-bats.

Daulton Varsho hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning in the loss.

The Blue Jays will face the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.
