“La Pixarrina” was a pioneer: “She was a good, kind and close person”

In the blacksmith’s house, a wooden knife. That was surely what Ana Isabel Fernández thought when she discovered that her grandson Álvaro did not like soccer. How could it be that a woman who helped found one of the most beloved clubs in Oviedo could have an anti-football family member? Life is so.

Fernández (Oviedo, 1949), one of the most beloved supporters of all Oviedo fans, died a week ago at the age of 74. In 1998 she founded, together with her friend María del Puerto, the Peña Azul La Regenta, a women-only club. Because they saw that there were none, but above all, to help erase the idea that football is only a man’s thing.

Whether because they are women or because they are natural, the fact is that footballers and personalities from the blue entity always went en masse to the parties organized by said club, in which they used to hand out trophies annually. In addition, they met for dinner weekly at the La Perdiz cider house and traveled throughout the national territory wherever the blue club was.

Fernández always had the example of La Pixarra in his mind and he put a similar effort into supporting his favorite club, Real Oviedo.

His love for football began when Fernández was just 16 years old. He met Tino Fraile, eight years older than her, and fell madly in love with her. They married two years later. He was a soccer player, and played for several important teams on the regional scene, such as Astur or Cornellana. She had never been interested in sports, but she went to see her beloved husband at every field he played on and there her passion for soccer began. She was always very much from Oviedo, so she decided to enroll her entire family in the Herrero club. They visited all the fields in Spain and saw Oviedo in its golden years. “She was a terribly good, kind and close woman. That’s why everyone loved her so much,” says her daughter, Sara Fraile.

“La Pixarrina”, as her loved ones knew her, went out of her way body and soul from the presidency of the Peña La Regenta to encourage Oviedo from the heart. For this reason, among other things, this organization had 66 members.

The news of his death saddened many. Fernández was a person who was known to most of the people who enjoyed the atmosphere of the pre-match, both at the Tartiere and outside. Now, this pleasant club member will have to cheer on Oviedo from the sky, and if he does so with his usual determination, the blue team will surely achieve great things in a short time.
