KSV Esslingen Shifting Focus to Youth Development After Exiting Judo Bundesliga

After withdrawing from the Judo Bundesliga, KSV Esslingen is concentrating on youth work. The goal is to build a competitive team.

It was a bit of a bang in the German judo scene last fall: After a few runner-up titles in the Judo Bundesliga, KSV Esslingen became German champions for the very first time in the club’s 129-year history thanks to an 8-6 final win against long-term rivals TSV Abensberg – and then the team withdrew from the Bundesliga a few weeks later. The reason: Long-time team leader Carsten Finkbeiner felt unable to continue his voluntary job and there was no successor in sight. Since then, they have been baking smaller bread rolls at the traditional Esslingen club. The national and international top fighters are gone and the previous second team has become the first. The KSV team is currently only made up of Esslingen’s own players, but at least it competes in the Baden-Württemberg league – the third highest German competition class. What is booming is the youth and children’s sector – the next generation should now slowly be introduced to the active ones.
