KRC Genk’s Season: Falling Just Short of Greatness

KRC Genk ultimately finished in the top 6 and can therefore prepare for the Champions’ Play-off from this weekend. Yet it was not a great season, but rather a season that just fell short.

Last season, KRC Genk just missed out on the title, but then they had to go out in the group stage in Europe after they also missed out on the Champions League. And they were also quickly eliminated in the Belgian Cup.

On the final match day of the Jupiler Pro League they were still able to claim the top 6 and the Champions’ Play-off, although there was of course a lot to do after the salon draw against Westerlo: it became 1-1 in the Tub.

What can we expect from Genk in the final and how should we view the season so far? Bee MIDMID they are already very critical: “I always hear from players and ex-players of Genk that it is far too good a club,” says Yanko Beeckman.

Good transfers, but no plan B

“Good transfers are being made and there is a lot of talent, but there are too many good guys and too few leaders in the dressing room. For a long time it was also too lax in training, that is something you take with you in matches.”

“They rely on good football and then suddenly there is no plan B. Is a player like Bryan Heynen as much of a winner as Vanaken or Vormer who is going to get something over the line?” The rest of the panel also sees that the lack of a scoring striker like Paul Onuachu is greater than perhaps expected in advance.
