He confirmed this in an interview with Welt am Sonntag: “Yes, it’s also about balance. I am confident enough to say that I have certain skills that I can rely on. But there are things I can still improve. That’s just what I do. For me it’s normal.”
In recent years, Kimmich has mostly been used in defensive midfield. He is currently needed in the back four in both the DFB team and Bayern. Kimmich (“I am six”) sees himself more in the center, but puts himself at the service of the team.
Kimmich and the unbridled ambition
“Of course the requirements potential of the two positions differ,” explained the 29-year-old: “But both are exciting and interesting. I’m fine with it and play where the coach sees me as most important for the team.”

He tries to “interpret the role the way I have always done it and playfully influence the game with creativity and ideas from there.”
Kimmich’s ambition is as great as ever, regardless of the position: “It’s inside me, always has been. It was clear to me early on that you only win when the team works and it’s not about dribbling past five or six players. Winning as a team motivated me as a child – and still drives me today.”
And for the team’s success, you need various pieces of the puzzle: “It’s like always in life, whether on the pitch or off – it’s about balance.” Of course, a team needs “different types, different facets,” said Kimmich. For example, a right-back who fully accepts his role.
