Kevin Costner’s Response to John Mulaney’s Roast and His Future Projects Revealed

Résumé

  • Mulaney’s comedic roast in Field of Dreams at the Oscars caught Costner’s attention, leading to a light-hearted response on social media.
  • Costner’s next project, Horizon: An American Saga, has the potential to bring him the same success as Dances With Wolves.
  • Despite the controversy surrounding his departure from Yellowstone, Costner remains focused on finishing what he started in the franchise.

Academy Award winner Kevin Costner has shared his appreciation of John Mulaney’s unique take on baseball drama Field of Dreams, as seen at this year’s Academy Awards. Taking the stage to present the Achievement in Sound award, Mulaney delivered an expected comedic monologue, which included a light roast of Costner’s 1989 film.

As he prepared to present the award, Mulaney instead went off on a tangent and said:

“For years, movies didn’t have sound, then they figured it out. Some say the silent era was the golden age of cinema – those people are difficult and crazy. Without sound, we wouldn’t have been able to hear such classic phrases as “You’re going to need a bigger boat.” Or how about that moment in Field of Dreams where we hear, “If you build it, he will come,” and then Costner does it, he builds a baseball field. Or I guess he doesn’t build it – he mows corn, and then there’s a field and he says, “I’m going to watch ghosts play baseball,” and the bank says, “You want to pay your mortgage?” ‘ And he said, “No, I’m going to watch ghosts play baseball.” »

The audience’s reaction that night was one thing, but then it drew Costner to his social media account, where he shared a clip of the video and commented:

He congratulated all of the night’s winners and perhaps hopes to be among them after the two-part release of his new Western epic, Horizon: An American Saga.

Kevin Costner swapped Yellowstone for Horizon

The past few months have been a trying time for Costner, following a high-profile divorce and numerous controversies over his alleged departure from the Yellowstone franchise ahead of its final season.

After playing Yellowstone’s John Dutton throughout the popular series, Costner reportedly clashed with creator Taylor Sheridan as Season 5 prepared to move forward with its series-ending finale. Currently, it remains unclear whether Costner will return to reprise his role for the second half of the fifth season, with the actor recently reported wanting to “finish what he started” in the franchise.

In the meantime, Costner will bring his own Horizon to theaters this summer, with Chapter 1 releasing in theaters on June 28, 2024 and Chapter 2 on August 16, 2024. The first trailer was released last month, promising an epic story that is just as Oscar-worthy as Costner’s 1990 film Dances With Wolves. We can only wait to see if it can repeat the success of that film, but with Western-themed projects having won new fans thanks to Yellowstone and its numerous spin-offs, there is every chance that Horizon could be about to arrive at just the right time to take advantage of this wave.
