Kawhi Leonard secured the Clippers victory with two and-1s and a block against Kelly Oubre Jr. in a chaotic final phase. The Sixers still had a chance when a wedgie was followed by a jump ball, but on Oubre’s final drive the whistle remained silent despite plenty of physical contact.
Sixers coach Nick Nurse then stormed onto the field and had to be held back by his assistants so that he didn’t get in the way of the referees. Oubre also joined him and he too had to be pulled away. “It was very emotional,” said the forward after the game. The referees are not perfect either, I would like to apologize to them.”
Incidentally, the referees did the same, saying after the game that Oubre should have been given a whistle. “We interpreted it so that the defender goes vertically up,” explained crew chief Kevin Scott. “When we watched the scene again after the game, we saw Paul Goerge move slightly to the side. We should have called a foul.”
