Figure Skating World Championships: Sakamoto wins her third gold

Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto is world figure skating champion for the third time in a row. At the title fights in Montreal, Canada, the 23-year-old won gold after fourth place in the short program in the free skate (222.96 points) and became the first woman since the American Peggy Fleming (1966, 1967, 1968) to win the World Championships. Hat trick perfect.

European champion Loena Hendrickx (Belgium), who went into the decision as the leader, made a mistake and fell back to fourth place. Silver went to 17-year-old American Isabeau Levito, while South Korean Kim Chae-yeon, the same age, took bronze.

The only German individual starter, Kristina Isaev, missed the final round of the best 24 starters with 29th place in the short program.
