“The patients who suffered frostbite injuries in conjunction with the Chiefs game, they’re just getting to the point where we’re now starting to discuss that their amputations might be necessary,” Dr. Megan Garcia, director of the burn center, told FOX 4 KC.
The experts gave the example of a fan who only took off his gloves for five minutes. to set up a tent in the parking lot and was left with red fingertips that have since turned dark blue and purple.
The New York Post reports that 30 percent of patients under discussion for amputations have been receiving treatment during the last weeks in hyperbaric oxygen tanks.
The doctors pointed out that, despite all these treatments, they will continue to feel pain.
“It is still a lifelong process. “They will have sensitivity and pain for the rest of their lives and will always be more susceptible to frostbite in the future so we are also educating them to make sure they stay warm for the years and months to come.”
According to United States media, the game played on January 13 was the fourth coldest in the history of the league.
Thermostats in the field showed a chilling temperature of -4 degrees at the start and dropped to eight degrees below zero during the game.
The -27 degree wind chill also marked the third coldest wind chill in NFL history, saccording to the Chiefs.
The Kansas City Fire Department transported 15 people from the stadium to the hospital, seven with hypothermia and three with frostbite, according to KMBC.com.
“People think of burns, they think of fire, they think of hot thermal injuries. But burns can occur from many different causes,” said the Grossman Burn Center.
