FC Bayern Munich, News: Julian Nagelsmann defends Dayot Upamecano
National coach Julian Nagelsmann raved highly about Dayot Upamecano. The FC Bayern Munich central defender has recently come under criticism.
“I worked with Upa for a long time in Leipzig and at Bayern. He is generally a player who can do everything,” said Nagelsmann about his former protégé at a press conference on Friday, which was also attended by French journalists.
Upamecano has “incredible physical qualities and is an incredibly nice person,” added the ex-FCB coach: “It’s not easy for him at Bayern at the moment because they have another stable duo in defense (Eric Dier and Matthijs de Ligt; Editor’s note). But I’m sure he’ll play many more good games because he’s an absolute top player.”
Nagelsmann also finds it “a shame” that Mathys Tel was not nominated for either the senior national team or the France U21. “He is a great talent who has everything a footballer needs. He has a great attitude and always gives his all. He is not the typical young striker who only scores goals, but he also works very hard and invests a lot. Before or later he will play for the senior national team, I’m sure,” he said.
On Saturday, Nagelsmann and the German national team will face France.
