At the heart of the Capdenac judo club, Maëlys Albrespic and Lucie Guibal obtained the coveted black belt last November. These young judokas share the details of their adventure, from their modest beginnings to this great accomplishment, under the firm but caring guidance of their coach, Isabelle Meyniel.

Lucie Guibal, a life around judo

Lucie, born in 2008 and currently in second grade at the François Marty high school in Monteils, began her journey in judo at the age of 6, inspired by her big sister who had already adopted this discipline. Lucie never turned back, and her dedication was demonstrated by many sacrifices, including the many Friday evenings and Saturday mornings dedicated to preparing the belts. Learning to lose was also part of the adventure. Despite the challenges, obtaining this black belt was a moment of enormous joy for her, reinforced by sharing this accomplishment with Maëlys. “Judo represents a large part of my life. The moments, whether good or bad, have made me move forward and grow. The moral code of judo guides my daily life, recalling essential values such as politeness, courage and respect. Even if I no longer practice judo in the future, it will stay with me.” Her relationship with her coach, Isabelle Meyniel, is described by the young woman as excellent, highlighting the support and perseverance provided to the practice of judo. Lucie now aims for victory in competitions and at the French championships, aware of the difficulties such as defeat and the effort necessary to overcome each fight.

Maëlys Albrespic, determination and courage

Maëlys, born in 2006, is in her final year at Raymond Naves high school in Toulouse. Also started in CP class at the age of 6 under the influence of her mother and her brother, her passion for judo has accompanied her throughout her journey, with the exception of a break during the Covid-19 pandemic. Her sacrifices include hours on Saturday morning and Friday evening, as well as dietary adjustments to maintain the required weight. “Judo represents the pride of having arrived here, shared memories, security and a form of preparation for life. It is particularly reassuring to know how to fall and to master the basics of jujitsu, useful for life. Judo m made us grow morally, respecting the moral code essential to practice it.” Looking to the future, Maëlys is not closed to the idea of continuing judo, conditioned by his studies. Inspired by figures such as Teddy Riner, Clarisse Agbegnenou, Shirine Boukli and Céline Dumerc, she also practices basketball and various sporting activities at school.

Complicity and joint success

Their complicity forged since their childhood proves to be a major asset in their joint success. Together, Maëlys and Lucie overcame the challenges, sharing unforgettable moments such as validating katas and winning competitions. “Arming yourself with patience and persevering are the keys for all young judokas and judokates who aspire to the black belt. Continuing to believe in yourself, even after a defeat, is the way forward,” they advise. Maëlys and Lucie, through their determination and commitment, embody the spirit of judo, inspiring future generations of Capdenac judokas to persevere, to believe in their dreams and to embrace the precious values of this age-old sport.
