Jonas Vingegaard Dominates Early Season Races: Is He Peaking Too Soon?

Jonas Vingegaard has shown his top form early in the season and has humiliated the competition in every race he has participated in so far.

In O Gran Camino, Deen won every stage and the overall victory. In Tirreno-Adriatico he won two stages and again the overall victory. Vingegaard is already a huge favorite to win the Tour for the third time, but isn’t he in shape too early?

“I’m not worried about that,” he says The newspapaer. “Being good now is no guarantee that I will also be good in the Tour. And anyone who is bad now can certainly be good in the Tour. The build-up to the Tour is a different phase of the season.”

“Compared to last year, I don’t think I’m better or worse. It’s just that it didn’t come out right away in Paris-Nice last year. Two years ago I was worse during this period. My preparation wasn’t good then, I was been sick.”

Basque Country

Next on his program is the Tour of the Basque Country. Vingegaard will meet Remco Evenepoel and ex-teammate Primoz Roglic for the first time this season. “They are among the best riders in the world and it is always fun and challenging to compete against them,” he said enthusiastically.

“It’s always good to know where you stand against them. So yeah, I’m looking forward to competing against them. The peloton here in Tirreno was already of a high level, but Remco and Primoz are simply among the best riders in the world.”
