JD Martínez agreed with the Mets for one year

Free agent designated hitter JD Martínez has agreed to terms on a one-year, $12 million contract with the Mets, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The club has yet to confirm the news, which was first reported by MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

Martínez had a big rebound in the power department in 2023. After a 2022 campaign in which he hit just 16 home runs in 533 at-bats (the fewest homers in a year of 400 or more BV for the right-handed slugger) , hit 33 in just 432 at-bats last season. His .572 slugging percentage in 2023 was the highest in his last five seasons.

Although he is entering his age-36 campaign in 2024, there is no reason to think Martínez won’t continue to be productive at the plate as a designated hitter. The six-time All-Star himself missed some time due to injury in 2023, limiting him to 113 games. But overall, he’s been pretty durable over the last six seasons.

Importantly, upon his return from a groin injury that sidelined him for most of August and early September of last season, Martínez finished strong, hitting .333/.371/.679 with eight homers in his last 21 games in the regular round.
