“Young friend, we need to talk.” Daniil Medvedev takes Holger Rune to task

If you asked Thomas Muster or Ivan Lendl, the two legends would probably have no idea why Daniil Medvedev was so excited. For Muster, Lendl, but also many other players from previous years, the following rule applies: Poorly presented attacks should and may be punished. And the most effective way to do this is with a ball through the middle. So through the man.

What is less remembered is whether and how Muster, Lendl and Co. apologized to their opponents, no: asked for an apology. Ultimately, that was what annoyed Medvedev: that Holger Rune played very aggressively on his body, but then didn’t take the remorseful penitential pose. At least not so obviously that Medvedev was able to notice it. When saying goodbye at the net, the Russian once again warned that the action would be discussed in the locker room.

Medvedev trains with Mouratoglou from time to time

The good news: Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune love each other again. If in doubt, Patrick Mouratoglou would certainly have stepped in as an arbitrator. Rune is looked after by Mouratoglou, Medvedev trains from time to time in the Frenchman’s academy. So you know each other, maybe you even appreciate each other (again). But Meddy and Holger clarified things on the spot.

“I didn’t know he apologized,” Medvedev explained after the match. “Then I’ll go crazy, evil. Carlos (Bernardes, the chair umpire – note from Red.) said he apologized. He (Holger) tells me that he apologized. And I apologized for not hearing it. I don’t think this story goes any further.”

It will be interesting to see whether Medvedev lets this scene influence him in any way. The 2021 US Open champion doesn’t come online voluntarily anyway. Unless the course of the tournament requires this, as in the final of the Australian Open, when Medvedev had to and wanted to keep the rallies short against Jannik Sinner. As is well known, one of Sinner’s coaches is Darren Cahill.

Which brings us full circle. Because Cahill played on the tour at exactly the time when net attacks always carried the risk of being shot down by the opponent. A reunion in the Indian Wells final is quite likely before today’s two matches in the semifinals.
