Jakob Busk: The Training World Champion Bids Farewell to Union after Eight Years

At Union, Jakob Busk was something like the training world champion. Although the Dane only played in his early days, he still remained loyal for over eight years.

The decision had been made for weeks. 1. FC Union Berlin officially announced it on Friday morning. Goalkeeper Jakob Busk will leave the club this summer after eight and a half years.

When it comes to competitive match statistics, the name Busk hasn’t appeared as an active player for years. He made the last of his 57 appearances on April 7, 2018 at home in the second division match against MSV Duisburg (0-0).

I found friends and a second family here.

That was almost six years ago. How does a competitive athlete cope with always training? Busk was asked this question more than once. He himself has obviously found peace with the constant bankroll. “I had a lot of ups and downs in sports, but I was also very lucky to be able to experience everything with this club,” said Busk. “I also found friends and a second family here. My teammates, the staff and the fans made this time at Union something very special.”

Busk was part of the great Union successes such as promotion to the Bundesliga in 2019 and the three-time qualification for European Cup competitions, but for outsiders only as a peripheral figure.

The little outbursts of anger are part of everyday training

Nevertheless, he was always one of the most ambitious professionals in the units. His little outbursts of anger, including screaming and grumbling when goals were conceded, were simply part of everyday training in Köpenick.

And as a member of the team council since 2020, he has ensured that the professionals always come together as a unit despite the constant and huge fluctuation in the squad. “Jakob Busk has such a difficult time in terms of sport. But he is so important for us and the team council because he has been at the club for so long,” said captain Christopher Trimmel. “The new players may not have him on their radar. But he knows the structures and the fan scene. He represents the club best.”

That was not yet foreseeable on January 15, 2016, when Busk gave his first interview as the new goalkeeper for the then second division club Union at the winter training camp in Oliva Nova, Spain.

The signing from FC Copenhagen was only 22 years old, but surprisingly confident. “I’m a winner,” said Busk in a media round. This sentence enjoys cult status among long-established Union reporters. Busk approached the competition with Daniel Mesenhöler briskly: “I’m coming to Berlin to play.”

Busk didn’t want to become a goalkeeping coach in Köpenick yet

Under the coaches Sascha Lewandowski and André Hofschneider, he immediately became number one in the second half of the 2015/16 season (14 appearances). But there were already sporting and injury-related setbacks in 2016/17 (22) and 2017/18 (20).

Every now and then Busk thought about changing clubs. Now there was also talk that he could become a goalkeeping coach somewhere in the club. But the 30-year-old didn’t want to retire yet. The father of two would like to play at a higher level for two or three years. “Jacob’s time at Union wasn’t always easy, but he never became satisfied or gave up. We are very grateful to him and wish him only the best for the future,” said professional football director Oliver Ruhnert.

Busk will have fond memories of Berlin and Union. Doctors in the city as well as those responsible, teammates and fans of the club also stood behind Busk and his family when his second son was not in good health for a long time.

Farewell game ends with a calf injury

The sporting tragedy of the unfinished team player is that due to the loss of goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow, he was finally able to play from the start again on Thursday in the test against FC Magdeburg (3-1), but was not able to finish. A calf injury thwarted his plans after 69 minutes of what was supposed to be his “farewell game”.

How bad it is will probably only be known next week. No matter how it happens. A busk won’t let that get them down either.
