Italy Secures Two More Spots at Paris 2024 Paralympics in Dubai Qualifying Tournament

In Dubai, Italy Para-Archery conquers two more places at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, one in the women’s compound and one in the women’s W1. To hit the target, the Italians had to reach the final for gold in today’s Paralympic qualifying tournament. In the compound both Giulia succeeded Pesci that Maria Andrea Virgilio who both reached the final, in W1 it was Dalia who reached the last act Dameno. The cards thus rise to 9 of the national team for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, as in Tokyo 2021. There will be two Italian archers involved in the Olympic, compound and W1, the maximum possible in each division, while in the Olympic, compound and men’s W1 there will be one blue for each division.

To achieve her goal, today Giulia Pesci beat all her opponents in the Paralympic qualifying tournament: the Ukrainian Malykh 131-92, the Irish Leonard 132-129 and the American Wallace 137-130. Same path for Maria Andrea Virgilio who achieved victory with the Brazilian Nunes De Moraes 131-122, 135-116 with the Iraqi Al-Murshedy and 137-136 with Akter (BAN). The two Italians then challenged each other in the final having already won the pass for the Paralympics, the clash ended in the shoot-off with a 138-138 (9-9*) victory for Giulia Pesci.

Daila Dameno had to travel less distance in W1, in fact the Italian, thanks to her first place in the qualifications, had already reached the final where today she beat the Turkish Misir 121-114, deserving her pass for the Paralympics even more.

THE OTHER BLUE RESULTS – The race towards the passes ends before reaching the semi-finals for all the other blues. In the men’s Olympics, the attack on the second pass by Roberto Airoldi, Davide Bettoni and Giuseppe Verzini failed in the first round, defeated respectively by the Latvian Jonasts 6-5 (9-7), 6-0 by the archer from the Czech Republic Chaloupsky and 6- 4 by Bangladeshi athlete Hossain.
In the men’s compound Giampaolo Cancelli beats the Canadian Watermann 143-132, but surrenders to the Kazakh Medvedev 141-140 in the round of 16; for Christian Seneca the defeat comes 143-132 with Dabil Alnaqbi (UAE).
The Azzurri men’s W1 race ends in the quarterfinals also due to a scoreboard that immediately pits Maurizio Panella and Francesco Tomaselli against each other with the former winning 137-113 but losing the subsequent clash with the Finnish Antonios. In both the compoud and the men’s W1, Italy therefore remains stuck with only one Paralympic card.
