The Italian national team of paralympic athletes with intellectual and relational disabilities is in Turkey to defend the world title. Two games today
The competitions of the 2nd edition of the SUDS Trisome Games, dedicated to athletes with intellectual and relational disabilities, began today in Antalya, Turkey. The Italian Federation that takes care of these boys and girls is called FISDIR, Italian Paralympic Sports Federation of Relational Intellectuals, it is part of the CIP Italian Paralympic Committee and is in Turkey to participate in this sort of World Championship for children with this disability, in the Judo, swimming, athletics, five-a-side football, gymnastics, table tennis and basketball.
Our national basketball team is a sort of flagship of Italian sport because it is the reigning European and World Champion, a title that our boys want to defend. The team is led from the bench by coach Giuliano Bufacchi. On the pitch are Cesca Alex (k), Rebichini Andrea, Greco Alessandro, Paulis Davide, Leocata Francesco, Durante Andrea, Barollo Stefano, Fiorini Flavio. The technical staff is completed by Francesca D’Erasmo from Florence and Mauro Dessì from Oristano. The matches are played 4 against 4 with 4 halves of 6 minutes. And from this year – except for the minutes of the quarterfinals – we play with all FIBA rules
The first match this morning was not played because the Finnish team had a gastrointestinal attack which forced them to forfeit and therefore win for us. The second, in the afternoon, was against the hosts Turkey, candidates like us for final success. But we won, 24 to 32 after an obviously tight match. In the last minutes our boys had the strength to grab a draw and then overcome the home team. Tomorrow we face Hungary.
Giuliano Bufacchi after the match against Turkey: “It was a tough debut against Turkey, a very strong team. We struggled a bit at the beginning because we were tense and on our feet then we managed to do what we do best, that is defense and counterattack”.
