Italbasket with Down syndrome world champions: beat Turkey 18-17

Italbasket with Down Syndrome becomes world champion for the fourth time. In a very close match, with partial scores: 3-5; 6-2; 3-3; 6-7, the Azzurri beat Turkey and put the last trophy missing on the board: success at the Trisome Games, the world competition for athletes with Down Syndrome. Despite the large Turkish crowd packing the stands, Italy held on, also thanks to the push of the fans who came to support the national team. There are now 4 world events and 2 European events in the Italian palmares, to which is added the satisfaction of seeing Davide Paulis also awarded as best player of the tournament.

“Great satisfaction”

Here is coach Bufacchi’s comment after the triumph: «Very good.

For years with Turkey the matches have been at a high level because their coach, with whom we are friends, works as well as we do. The satisfaction is greater when you beat a friend. Will they win next time? Possible. It’s the beauty of sport.”

The Head of Delegation Gaspare Majelli is enthusiastic: «Our basketball team, after having won all the qualifying and semi-final matches, wins the title of world champion at the Trisome Games 2024. The final played against Turkey, the organizing country, is was full of great emotions, played with great balance between the two teams and drawn point by point until the last seconds, all heart-pounding. Our boys, even under the scorching support of the home team, maintained the right concentration like true champions which allowed them to defend the world title.”
